SAN LUIS OBISPO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BOOSTERS ASSOCIATION (SLOIMBA) SUPPORTS MUSIC EDUCATION
The San Luis Obispo Instrumental Music Boosters Association (SLOIMBA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the musical education of students at San Luis Obispo High School and Laguna Middle School. Through fundraising, volunteer coordination, and community engagement, we provide essential support for band programs, ensuring access to high-quality instruments, performance opportunities, and educational experiences that inspire creativity, discipline, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
SLOIMBA (San Luis Obispo Instrumental Music Boosters Association) exists to support the high school and middle school bands in ways that extend beyond what the district budget can provide. While the school district offers essential baseline funding, it often falls short of covering the full costs associated with maintaining a high-quality instrumental music program. Expenses such as instrument repairs, sheet music, travel to performances and competitions, uniforms, scholarships, leadership grants, and specialized coaching require additional resources that exceed district allocations.
We believe that student participation in music competitions is just as vital to their personal and educational development as athletic competitions are for student-athletes. These experiences foster discipline, teamwork, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment. Competitions also provide students with opportunities to perform at a higher level, receive constructive feedback, and build confidence through real-world musical challenges.
By stepping in to bridge the funding gap, SLOIMBA ensures that all students, regardless of financial background, have access to the full benefits of a comprehensive music education—both in the classroom and on the competitive stage.
Last year, SLOIMBA
sponsored sending 40 students to band camp (41% of the marching band student population)
provided leadership training support to all band board and drum major students
supported sending students to 8 competitions throughout the school year
supported sending middle school students on their once-in-a-lifetime annual trip (with the honor of playing at Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios, or Disneyland)
covered all marching band uniforms and travel shirts
